This thesis is intended to provide an English teaching guide based on Rosenblatt's reader response theory and young adult literature. The prime issue in literature education converges on teaching 'how' and 'what'. Literature is widely used as a beneficial educational tool to improve students' language skills and to enrich them with understanding of humanities. It motivates them to learn the language, and brings out their affective responses. However, the Korean education system has put an emphasis on primary reading ability, to date teaching literature in a foreign language is confined to the mechanical translation of words. Thus, the question of "how to teach literature effectively in a foreign language," has emerged. Rosenblatt's reader response theory considers the inter-transactions between text and reader, focusing on students' experience. In other words, the theory emphasizes the reader's active participation in understanding a text through their own literary responses and in developing their literary experiences and pleasure. Therefore, reader response theory is suited for a literature based teaching guide. English literature is authentic and meaningful teaching material but it has been criticized due to its difficult structure and outdated words in teaching EFL students. Also, simplified version for graded readers results in limiting the reader's literary experience. This thesis suggests that young adult literature written in English should be an effective means to improve English proficiency as well as literary experiences for the EFL students. The thesis applies reader response theory to teach students the value of their literary experiences during pre-reading, while-reading and after-reading. As educational material, Lois Lowry's The Giver was selected owing to its comprehensible language, engaging stories, and authentic and rich expressions, which make them effective materials for EFL students. To summarize, English teachers should be able to attend to not only improving students' language skills but also their literary experience by the teaching guide indicated above.
